Finally after a long week of waiting we get thrown once more into the SNAFU that Devil Survivor 2: The Animation has become. After killing off one of the main characters Devil Survivor 2: The Animation is entering bad end territory.
We start right after the last episode ended with Hibiki and Co. still in shock over the death of Keita. You’re death was pretty much in vein Keita. If Hibiki was going to die, his death clip would have been sent to everyone and therefore he was currently at a stage where he couldn’t die. Anyways, loop holes, aside the death clips are proving to have a much greater potency compared to the midnight channel or even Mirai Nikki’s DEAD ENDs.
Hibiki and Co. are quickly brought back to base in order to help defend against Merak the second Septentrione (leaving Keita’s body to be eaten by crows). At this point I was getting some major Evangelion vibes. The cold commander who doesn’t care about the numerous deaths that Merak is causing (which is a crap load. I’m quite shocked at how many people actually died in this episode.) and really just wants the main character to suck it up and kill the thing that’s bent on the destruction of humanity. Only Yamato isn’t bent on reviving his dead wife and doesn’t have a creepy clone of his dead wife either, heck I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have a dead wife or a wife at all for that matter. In fact I’m pretty sure that, at least in the game, his main interest was Hibiki. Although to be fair as a JRPG anyone and everyone is paired up with the main character at some point so… there’s that.
Anyways Hibiki goes into a minor Heroic BSOD (trope!) and just stands on his high perch as he watches people die. As in he’s on top of a building and he’s been ordered to wait and watch. While that goes on though, Daichi gets assigned to the medical squad as his demons are horribly under-leveled, something that the JP’s personal states outright. Merak, by the way, is at level twenty-two and quite easily destroys the squad of tanks, the squad of Itsumades (killing a crap load of people in the process) and easily kills the squad of Angels (a level fifteen Divine demon).
Meanwhile again, Nitta is chatting with Hinako who proves to be a Hibiki/Nitta shipper (trope!) who causally suggests that Nitta find Hibiki to help him recover form his Heroic BSOD. With everyone given an assigned role the team roles off! Hinako by the is with the squad of Angels. Nitta just missed Hibiki as he recovers from his BSOD and rushes off into battle on top of his white st- tiger. Daichi continues to whine and really just be demerit to the team. Hibiki runs off into battle and then trips on his face and ends up killing a ton of people as they rush to protect him.
Yeah the team is doing super. Hinako nearly dies, her Liliam barely making it out of the blast that decimates the Angel squad. Of course she does push Hibiki out of the way of another blast and suffers a large injury in the process. For a second I thought that she was going to die, but well no dead face message no death is my logic for her survival. Hibiki quickly gets back up to realize that Merak just flew past him and towards what Hibiki was supposed to be protecting (nice, you idiot) and all is loss.
Wait no. It’s time for the side characters to shine! Nitta (flanked by a squad of Jambavan a level thirteen demon of the Genma family) showing her power summons a ridic- wait no. She summons Kikuri-Hime a level twenty-seven demon form the Megami family, which albeit is a huge jump from her Pixie and her Ogre is still not as overpowered as Hibiki’s Byakko which in all honesty shouldn’t be having that much trouble with Merak… Sure in the game he had a slightly annoying power, but still at the super high level Byakko is, Merak should be cake.
Which when Hibiki finally gets’ all the way out of his Heroic BSOD with the help of Anguished One, Merak proves to be well the level twenty-two he is. Hibiki makes short work of him and after lowering his guard dies from a stab wound by Merak’s dying breath.
Well no, he get’s saved by a mystr- Ronaldo Kuriki the one guy in the game that hates JP’s and is still a okay guy. Ronaldo (and Hagen a level thirty-nine demon of the Hero family) quickly kidnaps Hibiki after saving him. Yep. What a nice guy. Nitta is seen shouting for him and that’s the episode.
Great episode. It’s totally diverging from the game so I’m as in the dark as the normal watcher when it comes to what is going to come next, but my best guess we’re going to be introduced to some new people. Most likely Otome Yanagiya and Fumi Kanno as it seems that’s she woken and will be needing some medical attention.
