So here we are again. I’ll admit it now, I watched this episode before I wrote the first episode post, but even then when I watched the opening for the first time and I saw Touko I knew, name or not, that she was going to be Ichimiya’s younger sister.
How, you may not be asking at all? Well let’s just say after watching a certain amount of anime, reading a certain amount of manga, spending far too long a time on TvTropes, you’ll learn to just spot these things before they come. In fact in every single anime that has an ensemble cast, there is a unsaid rule that at least one of the characters must have some kind of younger sister. There must be! The younger sister character is such a staple anime that well, I couldn’t quite well see anime without it.
Anyways, here’s the screens.
Well what happened exactly? Well the first quarter of the episode was dealing with Miyoshi’s own crippling low self-esteem. Where in a great series of gags we have Yamagami trying her best to make Miyoshi feel better by pretending to be inept at her own job as well. Hasebe proves to be a nice audience surrogate, at least for me, in that he quite enjoyed seeing Yamagami flop all over herself trying to look worse at her job, whilst she really is a skilled worker. The gap moe of the scenes and her own embarrassment are what really make the couple gags that they through in enjoyable. Miyoshi quite easily sees though their ruse and it comes up to Ichimiya to cheer her up this time. Ichimiya does his best, but really own ends up committing a self-destruct when his own low self-esteem takes a rather large hit by his own words. It really is just a series of gags and well it’s funny, so that’s all that matters.
The next quarter of the episode is given towards Chihaya and she proves to be just as entertaining with her own antics as we learn that she’s quite the die hard cosplayer. In fact she’s not even a fully employed worker, shes’s simply a temp worker and the reason behind this being so that she can still have the ability to drop everything and go attend cosplay events. I can relate to that, I’ve too dropped everything in order to attend a convention. My marks were proof of that this year.
Anyway, moving on to the third quarter we are now introduced to Touko! Who if you couldn’t guess from my opening blurb is the younger sister of Ichimiya and is quite obsessed with the civil service. That and her older brother it seems. The interactions between her and the cast prove to be entertaining, at least to me, and she’s entertaining. There seems to be some sort of backlash to her, and many people are finding her to be generic or cliched.
Well, I say “Bah! Who cares! As long as she’s cute and funny!” Of course my opinion is a lot more lax than others, especially on the internet where everyone’s opinion is apparently set in stone and important enough to fight over. As I’ve stated already, younger sisters are a staple of this genre and this medium, and well… I’m perfectly fine with it, in fact I love it.
So we get some more gags between Touko and the cast, but aside from that the rest of the episode doesn’t have anything else plot wise. Aside from well building on Ichimiya’s character and showing where’s he coming from, along with further building of everyone else’s character.
So, yeah. Good entertaining episode and that’s all that really matters when it comes to this genre isn’t it?
